What is an open call in art?

An open call is a public invitation for artists to submit work or proposals for a defined opportunity. The outcome might be an exhibition, publication, commission, residency or prize. Eligibility, required materials, selection process, costs and rights should all appear in the organiser’s official terms.

Rolling vs fixed deadlines — what's the difference?

A fixed deadline closes on a stated date and often at a stated time. A rolling call accepts or reviews submissions continuously, sometimes until capacity is filled. Rolling does not necessarily mean permanent, so check the official page before preparing work and again before submitting.

What time zone do deadlines close in?

The organiser’s published time zone controls the deadline. If no time is stated, do not assume midnight in your own location. Submit at least a day early where possible, save confirmation, and contact the organiser when a time-zone omission could affect eligibility.

What should a submission include?

Most calls request selected images or media links, captions, a short statement, biography and contact details. Some add a proposal, budget or installation plan. Match file names, dimensions and word counts exactly; juries should evaluate the work rather than troubleshoot an application that ignored the instructions.
