In the organiser's words

RUC residency is focused on supporting artists’ development through reconnecting with nature and with the valley’s ancient traditions: the Camonica Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, is nestled high in the central Alps of Italy. It is renowned for its breath-taking glacial lakes and mountains, Roman archaeological sites, and most especially its prehistoric engravings carved in the rocks. RUC maintains a partnership with the Valle Camonica Center of Prehistoric Studies (Centro Camuno di Studi Preistorici) for academic programs and studies on archaeology and history.
In 2016, nearby Iseo lake was chosen by Christo for the installation of the ‘Floating Piers’ in its astonishing beautiful and dramatic landscape. ‘In Simplicitate Libertas’ is RUC’s 1 week residency retreat at Villa Amati during which a small group of international artists will experience the ancestral magic of rural life in a small community. During the stay, in addition to focused studio and en-plein air working time, artists will have the opportunity to take part in workshops and cultural trips to discover the main historical-artistic treasures of the area.
The Residency sessions last one week, and artists may stay for a second week by prior arrangement. Calendar of currently open sessions for the 2026 season: Sept 10-17; Sept 22-29; Oct 1-8; Oct 15-22.
RUC is a private estate in the hills that is home to a small rural community nestled among vineyards and woods. Artists will be housed at Villa Amati, a distinctive early 20th-century villa offering spacious, bright rooms and studios in a unique set of inspiring common areas. Your room and studio at Villa Amati will be private, while the kitchen, living room, and bathrooms will be shared. You will be accommodated in single or shared rooms.
RUC welcomes visual artists, musicians, and writers. Artists are encouraged to bring with them the materials they will use during their residency. If this is not possible, materials can be shipped to RUC in advance or ordered from a professional store in
At RUC, artists will have the opportunity to work outdoors and create their own outdoor studio space wherever they prefer in the garden area. Upon request, artists can also benefit from private indoor studio spaces at RUC: on the top floor of Villa Amati,
The cost of staying at Villa Amati can range from €550 to €1800. If artists need financial support to cover the cost, RUC is available to provide a letter of invitation to support their grant or funding applications.
We have no obligatory requirements for our artists. We like them to be completely free to concentrate only on on their Art, and what they love! That’s how we support them 🙂 However, it is always lovely and welcome, if they wish to share a very unformal talk to present their work to the other residents at the start of their stay, and if they participate, when possible, in the social life of the residency.
We accept applications on a rolling basis for the 2026 season. To apply, simply share your resume and a link to your website or social media with us at this email address: ruc@ruralcontemporary.org.
