An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences. Aviário Studio Coil Building Residency aims to promote exploration and production in the field of coil building in clay. The program is customized according to the artist’s goals regarding duration, outcome and focus.
We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation, research and learning new techniques; or it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work. Please note that ceramics residencies have to be at least 3 weeks. Specific Equipments Available: Electric Kiln (1260º) 220L Electric Kiln (1050º) 160L 3 electric Pottery Wheels
The duration of the residency can be 2 weeks up till 6 months.
You are free to decide if you want to stay at Aviário Studio’s accommodations or search for a place on your own. Aviário Studio has a guest house in the center of Ferreira do Zêzere and 2 km away from the studio (20min walk). If you decide to stay at Aviário Studio’s accommodations, you will be living in a shared house. The house is on the ground floor, and has one living room, an equipped kitchen, one bathroom, one toilet, three bedrooms, and outside space.
There is free wi-fi at the house. All residents are responsible for their own bed-making, and for maintaining a clean and quiet house environment. We advise you to rent a car, especially if you want to enjoy what the region has to offer, because public transports here are limited or non-existent.

At the studio there will always be at least one person to assist and advise artists about techniques, equipment, materials and suppliers.Project discussion at the beginning of the residency and a final discussion/open studio at the end.Complementary assistance or training can be booked and has the cost of 20€ per hour.
Aviário Studio is a creative playground in the countryside, right in the middle of Portugal. The building is a renovated aviary immersed in nature and just 2 km/1,24 mi away from Ferreira do Zêzere town, and 6 km/3,73 mi away from the river Zêzere.
